Performance & Genetics
Performance Recording
Accurate performance data is the foundation of reliable EBVs. Find out what is recorded, how the data is collected and how it helps to improve Charolais genetics.
Why Performance Recording Matters
Performance recording provides objective information about an animal's actual performance, such as birth weight, growth and carcase traits.
When combined with pedigree and genomic information, this data is used to calculate EBVs, helping breeders make more informed decisions and drive genetic improvement across the breed.
Key Benefits

Reliable EBVs
High-quality data leads to more accurate breeding values.

Better Decisions
Helps breeders select genetics that match their breeding goals.

Genetic Improvement
Supports long-term progress in key traits across the breed.

Breeding Confidence
Gives producers and buyers greater confidence in the information.
What is Recorded?
Charolais performance recording includes a range of measurements collected at different stages of an animal's life. These records provide valuable information about growth, carcase potential, fertility and more.

Calving Information
- Birth weight
- Calving ease
- Gestation length

Growth Weights
- 200 day weight
- 400 day weight
- 600 day weight

Carcase Traits
- Carcase weight
- Eye muscle area
- Fat depth and retail yield

Fertility & Reproduction
- Scrotal size
- Days to calving
- Female fertility traits
THE RECORDING PROCESS
How the Data is Collected
Performance data is collected by breeders following Society guidelines and industry standards. Measurements are taken at set ages and under consistent conditions to ensure accuracy and comparability.
01
On-Farm Recording
Weights and other measurements are taken by breeders at key stages.
02
Submitted to the Society
Data is submitted to the British Charolais Cattle Society and checked for quality and consistency.
03
Combined with Other Information
Performance data is combined with pedigree and genomic information.
04
Used to Calculate EBVs
The data is analysed to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) for each animal.
Explore EBVs and Breeding Decisions
Now that you know how performance data is collected, see how EBVs are used in real-world breeding decisions and what the figures actually mean.
